For one of my 2016 resolution, I told myself I wanted to learn calligraphy. I was excited to learn that one of the talented Filipino (not to mention very young!) hand-letterer & artist, Abbey Sy, is coming to Singapore to hold a workshop with the colorful artistic bloggers & designers The Googly Gooeys. There were two workshops to choose from. I wanted so bad to attend the calligraphy workshop held on an Sunday but living in Singapore have me nannyless on Sundays unfortunately. So I decided to take the Letters & Colors Workshop, though I am apprehensive with my lack of skills with watercolor brushes.
So on a Saturday of November, my very 1st no Saturday work on my new job, I headed to the artsy street of Seah Poh to attend the work at the lovely The Untitled Space. There was a wonderful mix of attendees for the workshop, all of us are females. There were even attendees that came from Indonesia to join the workshop. The bright lit room was filled with beautiful created words & phrases of art all around and the wooden long table in the center was swimming with vivid colors from the tote bag by The Googly Gooeys. Each tote bag contains:
– Activity Worksheets
– Abbey Sy dotted notebook
– Googly Gooeys notebook
– Pencil, eraser, ruler
– Set of Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens (S / M)
– Faber-Castell Watercolors
– Watercolor sheets
I finally met the adorable Abbey Sy and the pretty Tipsy, the feminine pink half of The Googly Gooeys. They were both incredibly nice inspite their success. It was wonderful to talk to Abbey of how her career came about, representing the millennials in such an admirable light and I love discussing with Tipsy on colors, her love for lettering since she was young and since we were both mothers, breastfeeding even came up. The class has this relaxed, no-pressure, like a group of friends got together for an afternoon for art and fun. Abbey and Tipsy gave us a crash course on lettering and using & mixing colors. We all had so much fun. We were talking and laughing as we did our own “masterpiece”. I like that we can easily ask Abbey and Tipsy questions and help if we seem to be struggling with the activity we are doing. I enjoyed the snacks they prepared for us while we took a bit of break. I love how cool and not pretentious the vibe of the room, just an afternoon of discovering the mysterious beauty of letters, colors and new friends.
I went home with my pink totebag and tools of art, excited to practice more on lettering and coloring.
