Last week, I was able to attend a workshop class organised by Bloesem. In my blog, I often take a lot of food pictures when I discover new restaurants or when I do restaurant reviews. I learned in my previous workshop with Bloesem, The Art of Visual Storytelling the  importance of taking good pictures for your blog and creating quality visual content . I know that I have a lot to learn as I go along in my blogging journey.

Trisha Toh from Malaysia, a popular Instagrammer together with Zara S from Bloesem Team teamed up to impart their knowledge in #Instafood- Food Styling & Mobile Photography.

The class was held at Bloesem Creative Space in charming Tiong Bahru. Bloesem Creative Space never fails to inspire me. I love the decor of the place and the lighting emitting inside the room is just perfect for photography. When the class attendees were settling in, we were offered some drinks. I haven’t had my regular morning java yet so I had coffee before the class.

We were given a workbook that will guide us throughout the class. Inside the workbook features some of photos taken by Trisha Toh.

The class started with the introduction of the Trisha and Zara S. We, the class attendees, also introduced ourselves and what we expect to learn from the class.

The first part of the class was about the basic photo tips and how to utilise our smart phone into a tool in taking a perfect food shot. No need for DSLRs. We learn about technical concepts of lighting, rule of thirds, negative space and many others. We were also given examples of good apps we can use in editing our photos. Then, we were also taught how to style our food by creating a story, keeping the food fresh, choosing a good placement & angle and choosing good backgrounds & props.

Then, we were grouped into three and each group will practice some of the things we have learned on the teach. I have to admit, I was hesitant in styling and taking a photo of my creation(s). I don’t think I have enough instinctual creativity at the moment.

Everyone was busy styling the food and props that Bloesem provided for us and uploading the photo into instragram with the hashtag #bloesemclass.

Here are some of the my food styling photos. Please be gentle with me. I am still practicing. If there are some points for me to improve, do drop me a line on the comment box. I would gladly appreciate it so I can improve my mobile photography skills.

It was so much fun! We made a lot of mess in the work space though, haha.

(This is the real mess we made. No food-styling done here)

After our ‘hard work’, we had a yummy lunch made by Bloesem resident cook, Ruth.  She is an amazing cook. Her cooking is rich with so much flavour playing in our tongues. We has avocado pasta & toasted bread and lemon cake with coconut cookies for dessert. It taste glorious as it looks.

I learn so much from the workshop. It made me appreciate the creative process of food styling, the power of food and the wonderful world of food-stagram.

There is a great news for my friends in Amsterdam. Bloesem will be taking this #Instafood- Food Styling & Mobile Photography workshop in Amsterdam this March. For those interested, sign up here.

THINGS THAT INSPIRED ME THIS WEEK

Just when I thought that my last week was busy, this week was definitely the busiest I have ever been. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

My parents came home from Saudi Arabia to begin their relaxing retirement life. My father have been working in Saudi Arabia for 33 years when we followed him there a few years after. The Sandbox as we loving call it has been our second home to us and it will always have a special place in our hearts. My parents said their bittersweet goodbye to Saudi Arabia last Saturday. I know they will miss the good ol’ days spent there. Before heading to the Philippines, they flew here in Singapore to meet Naj. They haven’t met him since he was born. They were so excited to meet their new grandson.

parents and naj

Usually after work, I would head down to their hotel and I would take them to some food spots and other touristy locations together with Naj, my sister and my hubby.

With my parents being here and me playing tourist guide, I was also invited to three blogger events! Those few nights I was invited, I have to ask my sister to do the sightseeing tour for my parents while I follow them after my events.

Club Meatballs x The Entertainer App

This was in one of the blogger events I been. I was happy to bring my hubby as my plus one. I am so excited to tell you all of three blogger events I been and an app that is God’s gift to  foodies.  I am also very happy that I’ve met Frannywanny, a Filipino food blogger that I have been following for years.

This week, I also took a mini-workshop on food mobile photography and food styling at Bloesem. I know I really need to improve the quality of my pictures and since I am taking a lot of food shots, I really needed it. I learned a lot from Trisha Toh.

Here is a sample of what I did. Please don’t be harsh. I am still learning.

And my activities didn’t stop from there. This weekend also I am having classes for my Family Medicine Graduate Diploma class. Yes, that is a Saturday and a Sunday. My week was definitely very very productive. Phew!

Here are a round-up of links I found online that inspired me this week that you might enjoy too:

Some tips so we won’t be late

We need this app and this app in our lives…

We should be eating more Dominos pizza

Let’s meet here and here to eat

Let us not destroy the self-esteem of our children

Such a cool idea to make for Naj

Can’t to try this Coca-Cola Chicken Recipe

Emulating those who are never infected by the green-eye monster

Proud to be Ilongga

I would like to watch this documentary about the mystery and meaning of marriage.

How to be more productive

How to look amazing in photos

A teologia tells us why certain relationships don’t last

We should stop making TV and smartphones the babysitters for our kids

Here are more tips to take an excellent food photo

How was your weekend? Was it as packed as mine too? Maybe next week, I will have a little breather and go on a slow pace. Then I can start drafting a schedule for my son and household chores for me and make a weekly menu. Life is best if there is a schedule. I don’t know, thats just me. Bye for now. I am heading to my class now.
