August 30, 2017 by Little Miss Honey 2,535 Comments

Barashi-Tei

Singapore is abundant of Japanese restaurant choices. Everywhere you get to find Japanese restaurant. One of my go-to Japanese restaurant if I want somewhere central and accessible, I often go to Barashi-Tei. It is a 8-minutes walk from Bugis or Dhoby Gout MRT. It is found in the busy area of Middle Road.

I am excited to learn that Barashi-Tei got new dishes in their menu and I can’t wait to try all of it. I also wanted to try again my favorite sushi in Barashi-Tei.

Barashi-Tei

Barashi-Tei

Foie Gras Sushi $15.80

Barashi-Tei

This comes in 2 pieces. I think this is a must-try dish. The foie gras is firm and perfectly-cooked in the outside with a hint of smokiness and inside is soft and tender. Some foie gras can be to mushy which is not very appetising for some people.

Moriawase $28

Barashi-Tei

Who likes sashimi? This platter is the one for you. You get 12 pieces fordifferent types of sashimi that is fresh,

thick and delicious. Dip in Japanese soy sauce with wasabi, you are in sashimi heaven.

Aburi Sake Sushi $9.80

Barashi-Tei

This is broiled salmon that comes in 2 pieces. Here, we had a few orders because we are a group of 6.  Another hit that is simple but delicious. You can taste the smoky and broiled surface of the thin fresh salmon on top of the well-cooked Japanese rice.

Unagi Salmon Mentai Maki $14.80

Barashi-Tei Maki

I love makis! This one contain  ell, salmon, egg and cucumber. I can have several of these in one sitting.

Ikura Chawanmushi $6.80

Barashi-Tei

If you are wondering what this is. This is a Japanese egg custard. It is often an appetiser dish in Japan. This one has a generous amount of salmon roe on top. I love salmon roe! The texture of this dish is very much like a custard, soft but not runny.

Deep Fried Softshell Crab $12.80

Barashi-Tei

Here is a crab shell that you can munch without any trouble. Dip in light soy sauce and maybe add in a bowl of rice and you have perfect meal.

Ika Kabayaki $16.80

Barashi-Tei

This is a big healthy grilled squid for you with tasty marinated sauce. I am thankful that it does feel leathery an no need to exert too much effort to masticate.

Wagyu Beef Don $38.80

Barashi-Tei

This is a dish for meat-lovers. A bowl of thinly-cut Wagyu beef will attract meat-loving dudes like my husband. The beef

is cooked medium rare, juicy and very yummy.

Spicy Salmon Maki $14.80

Barashi-Tei

Last but not the least, one of my fave in Barashi-Tei. These are maki made of crispy tempura prawn for that added crunch, broiled salmon with spicy sauce. Don’t worry it is not that spicy. I can have the whole platter of these and I would be happily satisfied.

Do visit Barashi-Tei if you are around the area and try their new dishes as well. Actually, I am dropping by Barashi-Tei during the long weekend because I can’t seem to get enough of their yummy maki dishes. I also want my kids to try their gelatos: Yuzu and Black Sesame.

See you there!

CHA THAI: THE BEST OF FINE THAI FOOD

October 17, 2016 by Little Miss Honey 1,184 Comments

I love Thai food. I would never say “no” to Thai food. That is why I am always in a prowl for good Thai restaurants.

I was happy to discover a Thai restaurant in Telok Ayer Street, the Cha Thai that provides a finer taste of Thai food and debunks the myth that authentic Thai food means street food at a cheap price.

Cha Thai

Historically, authentic Thai food means cooking with palm or coconut sugar and coconut milk. Leah, the owner of Cha Time, realized the need for Thai cooking to evolve with the change of time, ‘to fine tune their cooking methods to suit the modern palate.’

Cha Thai

Leah is the perfect person to bring the East meets West approach to Thai food. She has been admitted to culinary schools in Thailand and France which gives her an edge on how to combine the West’s modernization and technology but still maintaining and fine tuning the East’s traditional taste.

I was excited for the Thai feast I have prepared my stomach for. The portions were big and great for sharing. I don’t think 1-2 persons can finish one dish. The prawns used were huge! They used tiger prawns in most dishes and I learned they sourced their seafood from their own kelongs to ensure freshness. They also cooked their meat in sous vide technique to achieve the right tenderness. All of the dips, sauces, milk teas and drinks are made from scratch. Leah said,  “I do not want Cha Thai customers to be compromised, I want them to enjoy high quality Thai food”. So I wasn’t surprised to see the prices are not similar to the street price like many because Cha Time uses premium quality ingredients with modern technology cooking without squirming on the portions of the dishes.

Cha Thai

Lemograss Prawn Salad ($28)

Cha Thai

This is one salad that salad-haters like my husband would love! The tiger prawns are fat and juicy. There are mixed with lemograss minced meat. This is a salad that some would just want some rice to eat with it.

Creamy Crab Roll ($15)

Cha Thai

I love food with dips and this one is no exception. This is a crispy deep-fried springroll skins that is dipped into the creamy crab sauce. It is one of those dishes that are great when you want some light snacks with drinks while chatting with friends.

Crispy Prawn Cake ($15)

Cha Thai

This is one of my favorites! It is thick and juicy and surprisingly not oily. It is generously made of tiger prawns and best dipped in the sweet chilli sauce.

Green Mango Salad ($16)

Cha Thai

One of my favorite fruit is green mangoes because I love sour fruits. I was surprised how spicy this dish is though. I had to drink lots of water because it was really spicy for me who has low tolerance to hot dishes. But I surprised myself that inspite of its spiciness, I can’t seem to stop getting several helpings of this dish. Yes, it is that good. There were some diced nuts mixed in the salad that gave it a sweet and sourish taste.

Saute Eggplant with Basil ($16)

Cha Thai

Eggplant happens to be in my top 3 fave vegetable to eat. I love to learn how to cook eggplant in differently. I love their take on cooking eggplants with basil. It is nicely paired with rice.

Signature Tiger Prawn Panang Curry ($28)

Cha Thai

This is creamy dish with enormous tiger prawns. It is lightly sweet and spicy with several lychee mixed in the dish to give it its sweetness.

Pad Thai ($22)

Cha Thai

Of course, there should always be Pad Thai. I like the texture of the noodles and I like that they didn’t mix the chilli, beansprouts and nuts, allowing those who order dish to add the ingredients they prefer.

Thai Curry Soft Shell Crab ($28)

Cha Thai

This is one of the recommended dishes to order because of its generous serving of soft shell crabs. I love the sauce of this dish. It has a proportioned amount of spiciness and sweetness that I like.

Tiger Prawn Claypot Glass Noodles ($55)

Cha Thai

If you are a big group dining out with a big appetite, go for this. I love the peppery taste and silky texture of the noodles.

Tom Yum Vegetarian Dumplings ($18)

Cha Thai

So our vegetarian friends won’t miss out, this is the dish for them. It is unlike the usual Tom Yum soup I ever tasted. It still have its distinct sourish taste but it’s spiciness level is off the roof. Also the vegetarian dumplings are yummy that our carnivorous friends might just give this a try.

Garlic Chicken with Bird’s Chilli ($18)

Cha Thai

If you want something besides seafood, you can have this diced stir-fried chicken breast with lot of garlic. But if you spoon in a bit of the bird’s chilli with your chicken into your mouth, I have to tell you that you would feel firecrackers inside your mouth. I know I did.

Charcoal Toast ($8)

Cha Thai

Cha Thai

I just fell in love with this dessert considering I am trying to go gluten-free as much possible. But for this, I wouldn’t mind going easy on my gluten-free diet. It looks very interesting. I would expect that it would taste charcoal-y or burnt but there was none of that. It has crisp outer layer and soft in the inside. There were two dips to choose from: milk tea and pandan. Both are yummy but I prefer to dip my toast in the milk tea sauce. I excited for my family & friends to try this.

Mountain Milo ($8)

Cha Thai

This is another interesting dessert that is good for sharing. You get to pour the creamy milk to into the mouth of shaved-ice volcano-shaped milo. It maybe  too sweet for most people but sweet-tooth that I am, I liked this. It is a good dessert for sharing for sweet-lovers like me.

There are several desserts to choose from also.

Emerald Jade Green Ruby and Red Ruby ($8)

Cha Thai

Sweet Potato ($8), Sweet Corn Herbal Jelly ($8), Melon Sago ($8), Tropical Paradise ($12)

Cha Thai

There are refreshing colorful drinks to choose from.

Cha Thai

Of course, there is always the Thai Milk Tea that is filling and yummy.

Cha Thai

Cha Thai is a good place to take your family and friends to enjoy  interesting and yummy Thai foods that does not compromised quality or taste. I can’t wait to bring my family and friends to Cha Thai.

FOOD TASTING: BARASHI -TEI

July 28, 2016 by Little Miss Honey 1,535 Comments

Barashi-Tei

Barashi-Tei

My friends and colleagues are aware of my love for food that they go to me for suggestions on what restaurants I would suggest they should try. I would happily suggest this new restaurant discovery I went to a few weeks ago for people who are a fan of Japanese food.

Barashi-Tei is a cozy Japanese restaurant in Middle Road that offers authentic and fresh Japanese cuisine. It is owned by Mr. Wang Zhenfang who learned the art of authentic Japanese cooking from a seasoned Japanese chef to provide his customers quality Japanese cuisine.

Barashi-Tei

The interiors made us wooden panels,  and interesting display of beer bottles with dim lighting. The place was packed with regular customers on a Friday night.

Barashi-Tei

Barashi-Tei

Barashi-Tei

Our table was filled with a colourful yummy display of Japanese food waiting to be devoured and enjoyed.

Sashimi Salad $13.80

Barashi-Tei

This is such a happy plate with its burst of different colors from the different variety of raw & fresh fishes with leafy vegetables and tomatoes. It comes with a light salad dressing that works well with the fresh sashimi.

Avocado Salmon Salad $13.80

Barashi-Tei

Avocado and Salmon are currently my favorite food staples. I make sure I always have stocks of both of it in my kitchen. I was delighted to see it together in a pretty plate. I love the texture of the perfectly cut avocado and the fresh taste of the salmon.

Bara Chirashi $13.80

Barashi-Tei

This bowl contains bite-sized chunks of tuna, salmon and mackerel with cucumber cubes and tamago. The fresh sashimi just melts in my mouth. And I love that there were more sashimi than the cucumbers in this bowl.

Aburi Bara Chirashi $16.80

Barashi-Tei

This bowl is similar to Bara Chirashi except that this one is torched the contents of the bowl hence the it is more pricey that the Bara Chirashi. I like both versions. But I don’t mind sticking to the Bara Chirashi.

Spicy Salmon Maki $12.80

Barashi-Tei

One reason why I love Japanese food are their makis. This one is the yummiest maki I ever tasted. I was expecting it to be spicy but I am glad it was at all that spicy. There is a salmon on top with fish roe and  a deep-fried ebi in between that gives it a wonderful crunch. I can’t wait to go back to Barashi-Tei just to try this one again.

Rice Paper Ebi Maki $10.80

Barashi-Tei

This maki is similar to the Spicy Salmon Maki except that they used rice paper like the one used in Vietnamese springroll. This is a good option for those people who prefers the healthier option.

Yaki Tamago $5.00

img_2295

Tamago is a special Japanese omelette. I love the sweetness of the tamago and its velvety texture that melts in my mouth. Barashi-Tei make their very own tamago to ensure its authenticity and good taste. They import most of their ingredients from Japan.

Chirashi Don $23

img_2295

If you are one of those people who has to have rice in all meals, this is the one to get. Beneath the thick yummy assorted slices of salmon, mackerel, tuna, tamago and mekajiki is a bed of rice flown from Japan. This will definitely satisfy your hunger.

Sake Jyu Don $16.80

img_2295

This is a pretty plate for salmon fans. The salmon is sliced nicely-thin with fish roe on top.

Maguro Nakauchi Don $16.80

img_2295

For those who wants to try something besides salmon, Maguro Nakauchi Don is the one for them with its moderately thick slices of tuna.

Sirloin Steak Foie Gras $19.80

img_2295

I have not tasted foie gras before until that day. I am happy to announced that I love it. The texture was surprisingly soft and not stretchy.

Ika Teriyaki $13.80

Barashi-tei

This squid is huge and perfect for sharing. The dish is not chewy or rubbery like most squid dishes. It was heavily marinated in soy sauce to allow it taste to permeate into the squid.

Gindara Nabe $24.00

Barashi-tei

This is the only soup among the dishes. It is a very flavourful broth with mackerel, mushrooms, seaweeds and tofu. It is yummy hot pot for sharing with its light sweetness.

Wasabi Ebi $7.80

Barashi-tei

I love a good ebi. Wasabi was moderately added so it wasn’t so strong which I am glad. I am very a fan of too spicy food. The shrimps were huge and juicy

Kuruma Ebi $7.80

BarashiTei

Similar to Wasabi Ebi, this one is a pan-friend with a heavy drizzling of freshly minced garlic. I love garlic so I was really enjoying this dish a lot.

Smoked Duck Kushi $2.60

Barashi-tei

This dish was not heavily saturated with sauces or spices. It was soft and chewy but I wasn’t really into the dish. I prefer my duck to be roasted than smoked.

Orange Pudding $3.80

BarashiTei

This pudding is a perfect end to a night of Japanese feasting. It was light and not overpowering sweet. It wasn’t heavy in the tummy. It was a great choice for dessert.

BarashiTei

Barashi-Tei is a great place for Japanesee food-lovers to feast on affordable, authentic and fresh Japanese cuisine at the heart of the city of Singapore.
