7 FUN AND FULFILLING ACTIVITIES YOU CAN ENJOY AT A SENIOR RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

July 14, 2022 by Little Miss Honey

Retirement Community

Some people are quick to point out that seniors’ mindsets have changed significantly over the last several decades. Others say that’s not the case. Instead, society simply has a better understanding of senior citizens’ needs and expectations. Either way, the aging parents and grandparents of today no longer fit into the stereotypes so many people have come to know. They’re enjoying completely different lifestyles and living life to the fullest. As such, modern retirement communities are making every attempt to accommodate those expectations.

Exploring the Exciting Activities of Today’s Retirement Communities

Modern-day seniors can enjoy a range of fun, fulfilling activities at a senior retirement community near me. Sitting idly by in isolation and waiting for their favorite television shows is no longer the norm. Rather, staying social and active is now a way of life. Take a look at some of the possibilities that are available to today’s senior citizens.

1) Enjoying the Spa Circuit

Research shows that monotony can have a profound negative effect on the personality. It can even lead to depression. At the same time, when we don’t look our best, we certainly don’t feel our best. Living from day to day with the same humdrum wardrobe and lackluster hairstyle can destroy a person’s self-esteem. In contrast, having a nice haircut and styling session can work wonders formorale. With that in mind, retirement communities now offer salon and spa experiences.

2) Social Events

Social gatherings are also becoming increasingly common in retirement communities. From casual teas to formal dinner parties, seniors now have ample opportunities to mingle with peers and get to know their neighbors. Those events help to ward off the harmful effects of isolation and allow seniors to forge strong friendships. Some have even led to much-needed romantic relationships.

3) Crafting Classes

An ever-growing number of people enjoy crafting as a hobby. Some have even made it a full-time job and an effective source of income. Considering all the tools and technology now available to the general public, crafters have more ways than ever to find their passions and hone their skills. That concept certainly extends to the senior population. Scrapbooking, woodworking, jewelry making, metalcraft, leather tooling, and countless other crafting options are available. Of course, knitting, crocheting, and cross-stitching are still on the table as well.

4) Exercise Sessions

Seniors are also taking their health into their own hands these days. For many, that means taking part in exercise classes. Dozens of exercise programs are offered at retirement communities, ranging from walking and swimming to aerobics and yoga. For those who need low-impact options, plenty of tailored physical activities are available as well. All these exercise classes can provide numerous physical and emotional benefits.

5) Academic Exercises

Academics haven’t been left out of the mix, either. Retirement communities offer residents an array of educational sessions and seminars on various topics. They may cover health-related matters, finance, technology, and many other subjects. They’re designed to foster learning and keep seniors’ minds active among other advantages.

6) Field Trips

While retirement communities are continually expanding their repertoires for residents, not all activities have to take place on the premises. As such, these communities arrange for off-site activities as well. Residents may be able to venture out on shopping excursions, trips to museums, plays, concerts, and a long list of other adventures.

7) Gaming

Many modern seniors have a mind for technology. They’ve already become familiar with smartphones, tablets, and other devices. Why not expand those horizons to gaming systems? Games are certainly available to cater to a range of interests, so there’s no end to the potential social, physical, and mental benefits of retirement community gaming sessions.

Leading a Fulfilling Life in Retirement

Today’s seniors are interested in staying physically and mentally active. All these activities and many others can help them do just that. They also provide numerous advantages from heart health to a reduced risk of developing anxiety and depression. Of course, there’s no harm in taking a little time to relax here and there in between social events, exercise classes, and educational seminars.

THINGS THAT INSPIRED ME THIS WEEK

Just when I thought that my last week was busy, this week was definitely the busiest I have ever been. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

My parents came home from Saudi Arabia to begin their relaxing retirement life. My father have been working in Saudi Arabia for 33 years when we followed him there a few years after. The Sandbox as we loving call it has been our second home to us and it will always have a special place in our hearts. My parents said their bittersweet goodbye to Saudi Arabia last Saturday. I know they will miss the good ol’ days spent there. Before heading to the Philippines, they flew here in Singapore to meet Naj. They haven’t met him since he was born. They were so excited to meet their new grandson.

Usually after work, I would head down to their hotel and I would take them to some food spots and other touristy locations together with Naj, my sister and my hubby.

With my parents being here and me playing tourist guide, I was also invited to three blogger events! Those few nights I was invited, I have to ask my sister to do the sightseeing tour for my parents while I follow them after my events.

Club Meatballs x The Entertainer App

This was in one of the blogger events I been. I was happy to bring my hubby as my plus one. I am so excited to tell you all of three blogger events I been and an app that is God’s gift to  foodies.  I am also very happy that I’ve met Frannywanny, a Filipino food blogger that I have been following for years.

This week, I also took a mini-workshop on food mobile photography and food styling at Bloesem. I know I really need to improve the quality of my pictures and since I am taking a lot of food shots, I really needed it. I learned a lot from Trisha Toh.

Here is a sample of what I did. Please don’t be harsh. I am still learning.

And my activities didn’t stop from there. This weekend also I am having classes for my Family Medicine Graduate Diploma class. Yes, that is a Saturday and a Sunday. My week was definitely very very productive. Phew!

Here are a round-up of links I found online that inspired me this week that you might enjoy too:

How was your weekend? Was it as packed as mine too? Maybe next week, I will have a little breather and go on a slow pace. Then I can start drafting a schedule for my son and household chores for me and make a weekly menu. Life is best if there is a schedule. I don’t know, thats just me. Bye for now. I am heading to my class now.
