BLOGGERS BRUNCHING, STRICTLY PANCAKES

January 24, 2018 by Little Miss Honey 40 Comments

Strictly Pancakes

One drizzling Saturday morning, five bloggers meet for brunch. Some were old acquaintances and others became lovely new friends. It was a nice Saturday to do brunching.

The perfect brunch dish would always be pancakes for me. Singapore is not short of pancakes, waffles and Western breakfast restaurants. However, in my book, if you say pancakes, I would always think (and recommend) Strictly Pancakes.

I have frequented Strictly Pancakes ever since I discover it. My hubby and I usually would go to the Upper East Coast branch which is now closed. We went there when he just arrived in Singapore to live with me here, when I was pregnant with our first baby and I also brought my sister & friend to this yummy pancake place. I have wanted to take the kids here because I know they would just love it. I am happy I am back in Strictly Pancakes to enjoy a wonderful spread of brunch yumminess.

Strictly Pancakes

We, bloggers, had our Strictly Pancakes get-together in their branch in Prinsep Street where you find a variety of different restaurant options as well. It is just in front of Pomo Mall, walking distance from Dhouby Gout MRT.

Strictly Pancakes have the passion for comfort food so they offer customers a wide variety delightful pancake meal from sweet to savoury all day long. Who says pancakes should only be eaten in the morning? Their pancakes are made fresh daily. They offer a cozy and welcoming environment that’s perfect for gatherings, or if you’re looking for a place to simply relax in. It is all about creating a fantastic Pancake Experience with them.

Strictly Pancakes

Of course, we took load of photos first while sipping our hazelnut lattes. Thank goodness for the natural light streaming from their ceiling, we were happy with the photos we took.

Hazelnut Coffee

The pancakes comes with maple syrup and your choice of butter: regular, rum raisin and garlic butter.

Strictly Pancakes

Presenting the food we devoured that day:

Benedict The Thief ($16)

Strictly Pancakes

Strictly Pancakes

Two poached eggs atop turkey ham and two extra thick pancakes finished with hollandaise sauce and asparagus, oozing with stolen heavenly perfection! It looks like a very posh ‘atas’ dish and it was a very filling one.

Garlic Buttered Pancakes ($17)

Strictly Pancakes

Strictly Pancakes

Medium stack (3 pancakes) served with prawns buttered generously with garlic and cherry tomato salad on the side for an aromatic mouth-watering treat. Since I love anything cooked with garlic butter, this is definitely one of my favorite.

Snuggle Up ($16)

Strictly Pancakes

A pair of tasty hotdogs snugly tucked within pancakes, drizzled with maple syrup, caramelized onions and coleslaw on the side for a quick satisfying fix. If you one for a savory treat, this one is for you. Scoop a bit of the carmelized purple onion while you are at, it is absolutely delicious.

The Druggie ($14)

Strictly Pancakes

Indulge in the ultimate chocolate fix with 3 chocolate pancakes served with chocolate ice cream sprinkled with chocolate chips and sliced strawberries topped off with our own homemade chocolate sauce. This is a crowd favorite and a treat for the eyes. It looks so sinful and indulgent, you can’t help but try it.

More For Smores ($14)

Strictly Pancakes

Strictly Pancakes

A twist on a classic. 2 pancakes layered with Nutella and torched marshmallows, topped with homemade salted caramel sauce and chocolate sauce, along with a hearty scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Sweet tooth take note! I prefer this one to the Druggie. Love the smores in between the pancakes! It didn’t feel burnt and I was loving the play of texture.

Chic Wings ($11)

Strictly Pancakes

Strictly Pancakes

8 pieces of a mixture of fried wings and drumlets that are well-seasoned with the right amount of spices for a kick. If you prefer a non-pancake order, get this one. The spices just makes this chicken wings extraordinary.

It was a delightful get-together between bloggers. I can’t wait to come back to Strictly Pancakes again with my family too.

TRYING AUTHENTIC PERANAKAN CUISINE AT THE PERANAKAN SINGAPORE

July 31, 2017 by Little Miss Honey 17 Comments

The Peranakan High Tea Set

In my first few months in Singapore, I met a beautiful Malaysian Chinese lady. That is when I was introduced to the word: Peranakan. She is a Peranakan.

Based on Wikipedia, Peranakan refers to the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to Malaysia and Singapore. They are also referred to as Baba-Nyonya. Many were the elites of Singapore. Most have lived for generations along the straits of Malacca. They are known to be good cooks hence, the Peranakan cuisine came about.

I was always curious of Peranakan dishes. I have always wanted to know what are Peranakan foods. I might have tried some of them without me knowing those are actually Peranakan dishes. Eversince, I have always wanted to try out the Peranakan cuisine.

It couldn’t been more appropriate to try out authentic Peranakan cuisine for the first time at a restaurant called The Peranakan, which is conveniently found in Claymore Connect at Orchard Road.

The Peranakan Singapore

It was a nice sunny Saturday afternoon in Singapore just perfect for a high tea treat.

What is a better way to experience the Peranakan cuisine if not to try out every bit of the dishes in moderate quantities. We tried the The Peranakan High Tea Set. This is good for sharing for two persons.

The Peranakan High Tea Set

This set consists of:

1. Kuek Pie Tee – a thin and crispy pastry shell filled with spicy sweet mixture of thinly sliced sauteed radish, mixed of vegetables and prawn

2. Satay Babi Kong Bau Pao – Pork Satay Braised Buns

3. Hai Bee Yam Open Sandwich – Spicy Minced Prawn Sandwich

4. Prawn Ngoh Hiang – Deep Fried Beancurd Skin wrap with minced pork and prawn

5. Mee Siam – Stir Fried Vermicelli with Egg, Chives and Chili Paste

6. Nasi Ulam – Cold Rice with finely cut herbs, spices and slivers of fried and salted fish

7. Kueh Ko Swee – Steam Palm Sugar Cake smothered in coconut

8. Pulot Enti Kelapa – Blue glutinous rice served with coconut mixed with gula melaka syrup

9. Pulot Enti Durian – Glutinous rice with Durian paste

10. Thick Toast served with pure Malaysian Durian puree

11. Goreng Pisang with Gula Melaka drizzle – Deep Fried Banana Fritters

12. Pineapple Tarts – The Peranakan’s signature tarts are also available for takeaways.

The high tea set consists of a selection of traditional Peranakan favourite dishes and desserts which are a mix of sweet and savoury items. These items, however, may change regularly. It is available daily from 11 AM to 5:30 PM, $48 per set on weekdays and $56 per set on weekends.

I enjoyed every item of the set especially the satay babi, pulot enti kelapa, prawn ngoh hiang and mee siam.

Mee Siam

A good news for Durian-lovers, The Peranakan also offers a wonderful set of dishes from appetisers, starters, main course and desserts all made of durian. Gila Durian is a pure indulgence of 8 course feast made of pure Malaysian Kanpong, D24 and Maosan Wang durians.

Appetisers
Toasties with Durian Puree
D24 Durian Pengat

Starters
Pandan Chiffon Cake with D24 and Kampung Durian Puree

Main Course
Pulot Enti D24
Fragrant Rice with Maosan Wang Durian

Dessert
D24 Durian Chendol

This durian feast cost $38 per pax (with minimum of 2 pax). This includes free flowing of hot pandan/ lemongrass tea.

I didn’t realize you can make a wide variety of dishes using durian. I wasn’t really a durian fan but living in Singapore, I have gotten use to eating loads of durian and has gotten to love this pungent ‘King of Fruits’. I especially love the toasties dip in durian puree and the decadent durian chendol.

A MIDWEEK FUN AT MAISON IKKOKU BAR: A BESPOKE BAR FOR THE URBANITES

June 7, 2017 by Little Miss Honey 1 Comment

Maison Ikkoku Bar

Last few weeks ago, it was in the middle of the week and I am stressed out. Work was piling up, mommies duties are calling and life in general was on the way of everything. I needed a pause on everything, even for one night. I coerced my husband in a one-night of breaking the rules and do something fun. He indulge me in my midweek fun.

I don’t want to do something absolutely crazy, just some fun to shake off my stressful week. And of course, nothing permanent. No tattoos. (just yet!) So, I realized I haven’t drank or felt that buzz of an alcoholic drink for a long time. So cocktail drinking is an option. But also it has to involve food because food just makes me happy. Hmmm…..

So, on a fine Wednesday early evening, J and I headed to Maison Ikkoku Bar for our midweek fun and rebellion. It was in the array of shophouses, cafe and restaurant near Arab Street. The bar is located in the 2nd floor of the Maison Ikkoku Restaurant. Entering the place creates a certain cool intimate vibe with the yellow lights and the biegy-white  textured brickstone walls. The place feels cozy but classy, just for the urbanites craving for some fun and good time for close friends. It is a long hallway of dark wooden long tables and they got a bar on the farther end. The bartender was creating this huge ice balls which looks like big crystals. The wall was decked out with amazing collection of liquor bottles and spirits. I also learned that they make their own spirits and liqueur.

Maison Ikkoku is founded by Ethan Lesie Leong. He is the director, executive chef and senior master mixologist of Maison Ikkoku and Fort by Maison Ikkoku. He started his career as a chef in 1991, specializing in Asian and Western fusion. He later dive into the bar scene then eventually concentrating in developing of the F&B industry.

Mr. Leong represented Singapore in the “International Flair Competition 1997” in Birminghan, UK where he was ranked 13th worldwide. He also showcased his talent in flair mixology in the Grand Opening of “Saltimbanco – Cirque De Soleil” in 2000. Very impressive guy which shows in how innovatively different the Maison Ikkoku Bar is.

Maison Ikkoku Bar is a bespoke bar where there are no menus for the drinks. Just tell the bartender what are your taste preference and he will make it for you.

I said I prefer sweet and citrusy drinks while my hubby, a beer drinker and new to cocktail drinking, prefers a relaxing drink.

I got this.

Maison Ikkoku Bar
It is a mix of passion fruit and pandan-infused vodka. I love the taste and the alcoholic  kick was just perfect. Not too strong, not to light.

My hubby had a lavender-infused cocktail made of gin with grapes with lavender grinds on top. It looked so pretty with its light lavender color and I liked the taste too.

Maison Ikkoku Bar

I love that drinking here seems like a fun game you can play with your partner or your group of friends. Its almost like going on a first date too. I will tell you what I am, who I am and you will figure me out by giving me a drink. The drinks become personal, almost intimate. I think that is fun and sexy. And ya, I think this bar would be a great place to go on a first date as well. The jazzy music in the background and the moody lighting of the place creates a drama and mystique for a nice first date. (On the side note: just don’t drink too much on a first date.)

But of course, there should always be food. We tried thier signature King Prawn Udon ($18) . I was warned that it will be spicy. For a person who is not into spicy food, this one is something that I wouldnt mind to be a bit spicy. It looks perfectly delicious with two large king prawns on top and Hokkaido scallops. The French Lobster broth is just divine, containing the chef special recipe. The broth for me creates the magic in the dish. The udon is silky and smooth, imported from Japan. The soup also contains black roe, wasabi roe and Asian herbs & spices.

After polishing off our big bowl of udon, we were ready for our 2nd round of drinks. We were getting a hang of bespoke cocktails so we opened up a bit more to the bartender, revealing what we gravitate to so he can create a drink for us.

I am an avid coffee-drinker so he created an alcoholic coffee drink for me. I could taste the coffee liqueur, toasted on top and it has a heavy foam on top with drizzle of caramel. I love it way more than my 1st drink! It tasted like dessert but it also gave a nice buzz from the alcohol. I haven’t felt that kind of buzz for years now. I never had the time to go out and drink for ages.

My hubby, a certified carnivore wanted something masculine and smokey. So the bartender indeed created a smokey drink for him. There was literally smoke coming from the drink. It is made of Diplomatico rum and orange liqueur.

We stopped at 2 drinks. Yes, we were not as rebellious as we thought we were. But we had so much fun that night. Just a break on the usual grind is just what I needed. It was such a refreshing experience and I can’t wait to bring my galpals there. It is a great venue to a bachelorette party too. We were lucky it was a weekday so we have the place for ourselves but on weekends, it can get so crowded and occasionally, wild too.

Thank you Maison Ikkoku Bar for infusing my stressed-filled week with much needed fun and originality. See you soon!
