FORGETFULNESS OR DEMENTIA

March 29, 2017 by Little Miss Honey 514 Comments

We often associate forgetfulness as something that comes with age, which is understandable. But in some cases, especially in old people (and increasingly today, even young people), forgetfulness may indicate the start of a downward spiral known as dementia.

Watch out for red flags

Memory loss is the most common symptom of dementia. But there are other symptoms to watch out for. These include:

– Memory loss

– Language difficulty

– Impaired thinking and judgment

– Inability to plan and complete complex tasks

– Changes in personality

– Inappropriate behaviour

– Agitation and paranoia

As symptoms of dementia may overlap with other conditions, brain scans are the only way to get an accurate diagnosis.

Be prepared for more than just a dementia diagnosis. Patients suffering from dementia commonly suffer from other conditions such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, stroke and Parkinson’s disease.

The road ahead

There is medication available to slow down the progress or reduce the development of symptoms but there is no complete cure for dementia.

As dementia advances, patients will eventually lose control of their brain functions. Along the way, they will slowly lose control over their movements and communication becomes harder. Until then, it is important to engage patients in physical exercises to improve strength and stamina. It is also important to always engage them in thinking activities to constantly stimulate their minds.

 Establishing a daily routine is crucial in the care of dementia patients.

Be on the lookout

More often than not, patients with dementia are unaware of the condition so observations from family members and close ones are extremely important in early diagnosis of the condition. Never belittle the unusual gradual changes because they may be a sign!

Patients with dementia will require special caregiving because it’s as if they return to the infant stage where the parents have to handhold them through everything. If you know all the effort required to look after a young child, you probably can estimate the scale we’re talking about here.

If you know of someone who might be a case of dementia, it’s better to go for a brain scan ahead of time! There is always a lot to be prepared for when a family member has dementia so an early diagnosis will give you enough time to deal with the transition.

 On the flipside, if results come back negative, at least you would get some peace of mind!

GOAL: FIT HAPPY PREGGY MOMMY

November 13, 2015 by Little Miss Honey 849 Comments

Pregnancy Exercise

When I was pregnant with my first child, I was one clueless lady. I was confused of all the changes going on with my body. I was too overwhelmed with new phase in my life, I didn’t know what I was doing, let alone even thinking of having an exercise regimen for my expanding body. After giving birth, the challenge of being a new mom set in and the struggle of being nanny-less, exhausted, breastfeeding, full-time working mom resulted not only having a cute healthy baby boy but also retaining a pesky hard-to-get-rid-of 5kg post-baby extra weight. And while I was still struggling with my 5 kg weight excess in my short stature for the past 12 months (yes, unfortunately for petite people, 5 kg can be very noticeable compared to taller people. Sad but true.), I found out that I am again pregnant.

So I entered my second pregnancy with a bit more knowledge of what is in store for me and I vowed to keep my self healthy and fit this pregnancy. I know that exercise and keeping fit during pregnancy will not only be beneficial for me and for my baby as well. My first trimester, unfortunately, was a little more challenging now compared to my first pregnancy. I only felt nauseous from 6 weeks to 8 weeks in my first pregnancy but in my current pregnancy, it stretched out to 14 weeks! I wasn’t able to incorporate any exercise at all because I was feeling dizzy, nauseous and ready to vomit anytime. So instead I concentrated on healthier food choices and eating breakfast. Before I wasn’t pregnant, I never eat breakfast. I would just rush off to work and have coffee at the clinic. My first meal would be by 1PM. Even in my first pregnancy, I hardly eat breakfast too, just crackers or yogurt. This time, I take the time to have a proper breakfast with brown rice and some protein. During lunch time, I would pick vegetarian options. During dinner, I would suggest more on fish or vegetables dishes.

After 14 weeks of pregnancy, I was nausea-free! So I started to do yoga again every morning before work. Here is the yoga sequence that I do every morning:

I also got inspired to buy work-out clothes. I am not much of a shopper but it seems that now that I am pregnant, I seem to frequent Nike Outlet in search for cute stretchy gym clothes. I used to be dumbfounded how to dress myself when I was pregnant before. Now I realized the trick is to look for clothes made of stretchy fabrics. I love that there is a lot of options in sport clothing store. I just have to look for an outfit that is not tight on the belly and find a size that is a little bit bigger than my pre-pregnant state but not too loose as well . It feels good to look cute in my gym clothes even with my growing belly. It helps also that I use my stretchy work-out tights to replace my pants for casual outfits by pairing it with a boyfriend shirt or flowing long blouse. I have to buy a bigger sneakers for my weekend walks because my shoe size went up a size higher.

I try to do low-intensity 30 minutes cardio exercises 3x a week and add some weight-training to tone the muscles with lighter weights.

Pregnancy Exercise

I am not aiming to be svelte model preggy mom but a healthy fit momma this pregnancy. I am currently in my 21 weeks of pregnancy. My belly might be bigger than my first pregnancy when I was in this stage, maybe because of my loose abdominal muscles but I felt more energetic and also 10x happier. Yes, exercising increases the endorphins, the happy hormones, in my system. Happy mommy equals happy baby.

I am also taking note not to eat or at least avoid junk foods, sweets, gluten and sodas. I also make it a point to drink at least 8 glasses of water. I also make sure I have adequate sleep at night and try to squeeze in naps if I am tired during the day. I schedule mediations in the morning and have prayer time at night.

Any preggy moms out there too? Let’s strive to be a fit happy preggy mommies all for the sake our little one…. If you have any tips to achieve being a fit happy preggy mom, please do share……

5 INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN – BELATED HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY

March 13, 2015 by Little Miss Honey 1,476 Comments

If I were to live all over again, I would still choose to be born as a woman. I love the complexities of womanity. I love that being a woman can be represented in many shapes and sizes with different roles and different strengths.  I love the lyrical contrast of daintiness with inner strength; physically strong but maternal; opinionated but spiritual; nurturing but can stand alone. We are filled with emotions and a great capacity to love & be loved.

Last March 8, we celebrated International Women’s Day. This is to empower us women of our strength, our significant role in the society and celebrate being a woman.

For my regular Little Miss Honey Five Fridays, I will be featuring Five Inspirational Women who embodies different types of qualities admirable in a woman.

1. AUDREY HEPBURN

 @ms_audrehepburn

Audrey Hepburn have to be in this list. She has been and always will be my icon. Not only did she inspire women with her fashion and her exemplary performances in her movies, she showed that women represent KINDNESS. She was a Unicef ambassador for years and have tirelessly served the poor and the stricken population in some parts of Africa. No one has spoken anything negative about her. Another testament of her kindness is that she managed to forgive her father who left them when she was still young and she even provided for him & took care of him until he passed away.

2. OPRAH WINFREY

@oprah

In 2010, Oprah Winfrey was named as one of the 100 people who changed the world in Life magazine. Oprah showed that women represent SELF-EMPOWERMENT. She is, no doubt,  one of the most powerful and richest TV personality. She has influenced a great number of people. Her mantra is all about “Believing in yourself ” and “Being the best you”. She encouraged that same philosophy that is being preached in the book “THE SECRET”.

2 . MAYIM BIALIK

@mayimbialikbr

We would recognized Mayim from her childhood performances as the young Bette Midler in the movie Beaches or as the cheeky Blossoms in the hit TV series. Now she came back in the TV scene to play the role of Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler, a neuroscientist. It can be daunting to play genius, right? But not to Mayim because she is herself a neuroscientist. She studied neuroscience and proceed to that a doctorate degree. Mayim showed women that INTELLIGENCE is beautiful. Women should stop acting stupid to be cute. Intelligence is something to be proud and not to be ashamed of. She is also a strong advocate of breastfeeding.

4. SIA ALEXIS  of DIARY OF A FIT MOMMY

Diary of A Fit Mommy

Here is another breastfeeding advocate. This sexy mommy blogger inspires mommies all around the globe to be fit, healthy and to love their bodies. She shows women that we have the STRENGTH. We have control over our own bodies. Strong is the new sexy. Skinny is out. In her blog, Diary of A Fit Mommy, she shares helpful tips in getting the body we want. She proves to people that she can be strong and still be maternal to her son and sweet & loving to her husband.

5. LESLIE LUDY

setapartgirl.com

Leslie Ludy is a best-selling Christian writer. She and her husband, Eric, wrote the book When God Writes Your Love Story which I read before when I was still in medical school. She has six kids, biological and adopted. She enjoys being a mother, accepting the natural chaos of a household full of kids. She represents MOTHERHOOD & SPIRITUALITY. She sets perfect example for young women in her ministry, ASETAPARTGIRL, where she equips young women to live a Christ-centered femininity.
