“(Wikipedia) ‘An Expatriate (often shortened to Expat) is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country other than that of their citizenship. The word comes from the Latin terms ex (“out of”) and patria (“country, fatherland”).
This blog aims to discover people who are adventurers like me, venturing out in a new place to call home and creating memories. I have previously lived with my parents and siblings in the Saudi Arabia when I was in high school. I have enjoyed and cherished my memories in the beautiful Sandbox I once called my home. Now, I am in a new adventure with my husband and son here in Singapore.
I am featuring Expats in different countries every two weeks to share their experiences and adventures with you and me.
Today, I am featuring an admirable woman from London – a magazine journalist having a time of her life in Singapore with her husband. Meet Claire. ”
————————————————————————-
- Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and where you are originally from?
I am a magazine journalist from London. I worked for some of the best-selling magazines in the UK and then I was given the chance to edit a magazine in Dubai.
- What made you decide to move to Singapore? How long have you been here?
My husband was transferred to Singapore. So after spending seven years editing women’s magazines in the Middle East, I joined him in The Lion City.
- What do you miss about the home country?
I miss my family and friends, a good roast dinner and catching a show in London’s West End.
- What are the wonderful discoveries and things you like about Singapore?
I like to take a bumboat over to Pulau Ubin and go for a bike ride around the island. It’s good to leave the skyscrapers behind and see what Singapore used to look like.
- What are the 3 tips you can give to fellow expats in Singapore?
Go to Baba House to learn about Peranakan culture; tour the organic farms of Kranji, and take advantage of Singapore’s location and go and discover Southeast Asia.
- Where do you get your inspirations? Who or what inspires you?
When I’m looking for inspiration, I will just go somewhere I haven’t been before. I will try a new restaurant, sign up for a new gym class, check out a new art exhibition or book a quick mini break.
- The LITTLE MISS HONEY community gets inspired through travel, food and books. Can you tell us your current FAVORITE TRAVEL SPOT, current FOOD/RESTAURANT DISCOVERIES and current FAVORITE BOOK?
I’ve just come back from Vietnam, where I took a scooter tour around Ho Chi Minh. We had a blast and I’d highly recommend it.
I would suggest booking brunch at the newly revamped Salt Grill & Sky Bar in ION Orchard. Not only do they serve up a fantastic breakfast, you get 360 degree views of this amazing city. If you’re looking for inspiration, you’ve got it at your feet.
- Tell us your typical day at work.
As a freelancer I don’t have a typical day, which is why I enjoy freelancing. I can be helping out my former team mates at Harper’s BAZAAR, catching up with PRs to find out the latest news about their brands or updating my website: www.the-sweat-shop.net.
9. Apart from your job, do you have hobbies or projects you are currently involved in?
My blog www.the-sweat-shop.net is a health and fitness website that has sites in both Dubai and Singapore. It helps people find out more about living a healthy life in their city.
- Share with us some of your holy grail skin care products or cosmetics.
I’m a big fan of Aesop skincare products, and I won’t leave home without Benefit They’re Real Mascara.
- What do you normally do for fun on a weekend in Singapore?
My weekend starts with a Muay Thai session – it’s a great kick start to the day. I’ll then catch up with friends, go out for dinner or to the cinema. Or if it’s a long weekend, I’ll hit the airport.
- Lastly, can you share with us what is your inspirational mantra in life?
Do something every day that scares you.

“Thank you Claire for granting us this interview. I can’t wait to try some of your suggested activities in Singapore plus I am thinking of getting that Benefit They’re Real Mascara. It really seems like you are having a time of your life here in Singapore.
