HAJIME TONKATSU & RAMEN: SINGAPORE’S FIRST TONKATSU SPECIALTY RESTAURANT

May 15, 2017 by Little Miss Honey 1,471 Comments

Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen

My hubby and I are always in a search for good Japanese restaurants in Singapore. We are such fans of the Japanese cuisine. So we jumped at the chance of going to Serangoon Gardens to check out Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen.

Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen

Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen in myVillage in Serangoon Gardens. My hubby and I were greeted “Hajimemashite” when we came in. I later learned it means, “Nice to meet you” or “beginning”. I realized that is where the restaurant name came from.

The restaurant has a modern and minimalistic decor with subtle lighting and red & black motiff. It is the place for casual dining and has a homey feel like a constant go-to place for family and friends. It was nice to see that the staff knows their regular customers and they are greeted with warm smiles & a quick friendly chats.

Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen

The chef of Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen, Chef Tan-san is a Singaporean trained in the art of making the perfect delicious Tonkatsu in Japan. He returned here in Singapore after his intense training in Japan in 1993 and started the first Tonkatsu Specialty Restaurant chain.

My hubby and I were excited to try out what Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen has to offer for us.

Tori Karaage ($4.90)

Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen

This made of chicken thigh cut into bite-size chunks. It is marinated for hours in a secret sauce which gives this side dish a very addicting delicious flavour. It is very tender and not oily at all.

Potato Korokke($3.90)

This is made from freshly mashed potato with some pork bits. Then it is deep-fried with soft bread-crumbs. This is made from scratch and only made-to-order to ensure its freshness. I really enjoyed this dish a lot since I have been a potato-fiend lately.

Miso Fillet ($17.90)

Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen

This is definitely the highlight of our dinner. It is beautifully plated before us. The miso is from Nagoya, Japan. The recipe contains red wine and tonkotsu broth.

Each of the fillet is made upon the specifications of the customers, depending on how tender and breaded they want it to be. To ensure the freshness of the pork, there is no pre-seasoning or marination done. The bread crumbs are fresh to give it a long lasting crunchiness and the fillet is cooked in such a way that it is not overcooked or greasy.

Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen

The dish comes with rice, pickles, Tonjiru soup with a hint of Yazu, crunchy cabbage and watermelon for the soothing effect for a wholesome meal.

It also comes with Gomo (Sesame) Seed which you grind yourself with a Goma stick & bowl. It is a nice experience doing the grinding of the sesame seeds. You can scatter the pulverized seeds in your rice or put with your Miso sauce or Tonkatsu sauce. I am loving the Miso sauce because of its sweet & tangy taste while my hubby digs the Tonkatsu sauce. This is a must-try if you are coming to dine in Hajime.

Ebi Fry Ramen ($16.90)

Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen

This is the the first ever Ebi Fry Ramen in Singapore created by Chef Tan-san. It has a Tonkotsu Base Broth simmered for 12 hours infused with a Sakura Ebi paste and a loin rib chashu marinated to perfection . I am glad is an all natural ramen with no dash of MSG. The Nama noodles has that right kind of  texture. This comes with two large yummy crunchy Ebi Fry. It has its own tartar sauce. The ramen is topped with a generous sprinkle of crispy Sakura Ebi. This is another dish I enjoyed and highly recommend.

Katsu Don ($ 12.90)

Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen

This type of Don Buri dish has always been my favorite. It is the ultimate comfort Japanese food. Chef Tan-san made a twist in how this dish is often cooked. Instead of cooking the pork fillet with sauce and egg, the katsu is laid in the rice with seaweed in between. Then the runny eggs, carmelised onions and special Donburi sauce will be placed on top of the fillet allowing the sauce to flow into the rice but still keeping the crunchiness of the fillet. This is also a hit!

I guess all of the dishes we tried was a 5/5. I kid you not. Hajime delivered an excellent selection of Japanese dishes that family and friends would love with affordable & reasonable prices. We are happy to have met Chef Tan-san. He was a wonderfully warm person to chat with which overflows in his mastery of creating a meal that envokes warmth and comfort. We highly recommend our family and friends to visit Hajime Tonkatsu and Ramen. It is definitely worth the visit.

FOOD DISCOVERIES: SUPPLY & DEMAND

September 2, 2016 by Little Miss Honey 1,026 Comments

Being married for three years, my husband and I would often see each other in our home clothes, messy hair and my face devoid of makeup enhancements (believe me that is not a pretty sight, hehe). It is nice from time to time to dress up nicely for each other like just the early days of courtship when we dress to impress each other. Hmmmm……

For our date night a few months ago, we planned to watch  a musical play (I’ll blog about this very soon) and have an early dinner nearby. I did some research on the affordable restaurants nearby Esplanade Theater. I picked Supply & Demand because my husband would love some pasta and pizza plus it looks like the prices aren’t very steep.

Supply & Demand

My husband and I were apparently late for our reservations so they have to give up our table at the rooftop bar. But we didn’t mind because the ambiance in the first level was very nice. It has a dim exteriors with dark wooden decors, nice metal hanging lamps and a tree inside the restaurant. The place was packed on a weekday.

Supply & Demand

We got the 9 inch pizza ($18.00). If we are famished, we could have gotten the 13 inch pizza ($22.00). I ordered the Morning After which has bacon, mushroom, mozzarella, onion, tomato sauce and a soft egg center. I love pizza with soft eggs and this was no exception. The pizza has an ardent crust which I like. It is a little bit dry but still yummy nonetheless.

Supply & Demand

We think pizza and pasta are a perfect pair so hubby ordered the Pasta Alfredo ($17.00). It filled our bellies with its creamy goodness with sprinkles of chicken chunks and green peas.

Supply & Demand

We were choosing between the Truffle Fries or the Cheesy Fries. The nice waiter said he prefers the Cheesy Fries. I wasn’t into the dip but I love the melted parmesan cheese and the chorizo slices. I just make sure I don’t bite on the jalapeno.

Supply & Demand

Hubby got an Albens Original Apple Cider to try. I was never into beers or ciders so I didn’t try to take a sip.

Supply & Demand

Supply & Demand is a great place for date nights and a cool hang out place for friends who wants to enjoy a casual pizza & pasta night.

FOOD DISCOVERIES: WILD HONEY (& WHY MARRIED COUPLES SHOULD HAVE DATE NIGHTS)

August 9, 2016 by Little Miss Honey 907 Comments

Wild Honey & marriage

Wild Honey & marriage

A few months ago, hubby and I had our date night on a place I long have wanted to try.  Wild Honey  is an all-breakfast restaurant located at Mandarin Gallery. Wild Honey features breakfasts from around the world, not just the regular pancakes & waffles. I have never been inside Mandarin Gallery so it’s my first time entering the mall when we visited Wild Honey.

Wild Honey is tucked in one corner of the mall. It is a spacious restaurant with dim lighting and electic decor with a classy but hip vibe that caters to a more ‘atas’ (Singlish for “high class) demographic. I love the dark hard wood furnitures, embroidered chair linings, beige lamp shades  and the mismatched chairs.

Janro got the Parisienne Breakfast ($24.00).

Wild Honey Menu

It is a stuffed savory french toast with signature brioche, leg ham, gruyere cheese, Dijon mustard with fried egg & Hollandaise sauce with salad & tomatoes. It is an adequately portion meal but though hubby hoped for a bigger portions of leg ham on his toast.

I ordered the Norwegian Breakfast ($27.00).

Wild Honey Menu

It is a delightful-looking meal and is beautifully-plated. It has the two ingredients, salmon & avocado,  that are helpful in increasing my breastmilk supply which why I ordered this. It is also th commonly ordered dish in Burpple.  On top of the wholewheat brioches are avocado slices, grilled asparagus spears, poached eggs wrapped in Norwegian smoked salmon with Hollandaise sauce & salmon pearls. I am pretty happy with my order. I love the fresh salmon and the salmon pearls. I love it when I cut through my poached eggs and the yolk dripped into the bread. Delish!

We ordered the Red Velvet Cake ($12.00) for dessert. It is quite different from most velvet cakes I’ve tasted. It is not overly-sweet  and it is layered with homemade jam & mascarpone.

Wild Honey Menu

Hubby got a Mandarin Wilderness Drink ($10.00) recommended by the waitress. It is an ice-blended raspberry, banana, mandarin orange and honey. It can easily mistaken as a dessert rather than a drink. It is a very thick smoothie drink. I find the drink too girly for my hubby and I, too, find it too sweet for my usual sweet tooth.

Wild Honey Menu

Overall, I love my dining experience in Wild Honey. I love the ambiance of the place and it is not to discover different breakfast style all around the world without leaving Singapore. I just find the prices a bit to steep though for a regular go-to brunch place. Nevertheless, it is a great date night restaurant and a good all-girls chat date place too.

Wild Honey date night

Oh why hubby and I tries (emphasis on the trying) to have monthly date nights? Here are a few reasons below. Let me know if you have any to add.

1. Friendships is a good foundation for marriage.

Friends hang out. Friends make time to spend time together. Married couples need to be friends to survive the challenges of married life. It can’t all be lovey-dovey stuff nor it’s all pure business like let’s-create-a-family-this-is-our-stategic-planning. Friendship is one of the key ingredient to a strong marriage. So having date nights give you both a venue to be more like friends rather than business partners in your marriage.

2. Married couples need to talk to each other.

Married couples would argue with #2 but we talk everyday!  When I mean talk, it doesn’t  mean talking about the housing budget, the plans for the kids or what’s for dinner. It means talk about each other – just about two of you. Both of you evolve through the years, you’ll be surprised one day you wake up that you are sleeping with a stranger.

3. You need to love each other’s company.

You have no choice – you married each other, so you are stucked with each other’s company- for life. So you better enjoy the company each one offers. Just imagine once your kids go off to college or have their own lives, it will only be your spouse and you. So better practice being with your twosome now so you won’t feel awkward being alone with your spouse. I know this might sound weird but there are a lot of elderly spouses who feel awkward being alone with their spouses once their kids are living away from home.

4. You need a break from the kids.

I said it. We love our kids. But sometimes we need a bit of break from the chaos, the crying, the dirty diapers and the constant interruptions from anything you are doing. Having a bit of break and sometime to change from our drool-covered shirt to something nice & pretty can do a lot of good. It will make you snap on your kids less and give your patience a recharge. Plus once you get home from a nice dinner out, your love tank is so full and you miss them so much, you can’t help shower them with so much love & kisses. Date nights make you both better parents.

5. You need to bring back the romance in the marriage.

Longevity of marriage requires couples to fall in love with each other again and again. Life can give your marriages a serious beating with all the obstacles in hurls on your way. So if you want your marriage to last longer, go back to the time when you are still in your courtship stage. Return back the romance that will uplift your marriage. Romance are just not for star-crossed young teenagers who doesn’t know any better but for ageing boring married couples too.
