CATHOLIC CHURCHES AT THE EAST & CENTRAL AREA OF SINGAPORE FOR LENT VISITA IGLESIA

I was raised Catholic by my parents. I have studied in Catholic schools and at one point of my life, I even wanted to be a nun. The teachings and traditions of my Catholic faith has been deeply ingrained in my system. This week is Holy Week for Christians. It is the last week of 40 days of Lent. The Holy Week starts with Palm Sunday then Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Black Saturday then ends with celebration of Easter Sunday.

On Good Friday, it is the highest point of Lenten season. It is the solemn comemoration of the passion and death of Jesus Christ and His suffering in Calvary.

On Good Friday, our family often do the Visita Iglesia which is to visit 7 churches and praying the Stations of the Cross in those 7 churches. And on the afternoon, we go for a procession with beautifully decorated floats depicting the passion of Christ and the Station of the Cross. During Lent, we dont meat though we are allowed to eat fish or any seafoods during Fridays.

The Holy Week traditions like Visita Iglesia and processions are often forgotten when you live in another country. Though I would hope to try to do the 7 Churches Visits when my kids would be older. It would be challenging here because we dont own a car compared to when we are in the Philippines. Driving around the city to the 7 churches is more feasible.

I have been living in the East of Singapore for 5 years now. I love being an Eastie. Though we are contemplating a move this year, we may probably still find a place in the East. So for the planned Visita Iglesia, I plotted and search for 7 churches in the East and a few in the Central area.

FYNN’S BAPTISM

Our little family went home to Iloilo for Fynn’s Baptism. We prefer to have his baptism with our parents, our siblings, our relatives and our close friends back home. I have always been vocal of the importance of my faith and my religion. I am born Catholic. I was brought up by in a Catholic home and studied in Catholic schools. I pray that my sons would follow the Catholic teachings. I am happy that Fynn joined the Catholic family a few weeks ago.

We had a small gathering of our family in the chapel besides the church that Naj had his baptism. The christening was officiated by the Lapaz parish priest. It was a beautiful and intimate sacrament and I am happy our family is there to witness this sacrament with us.

For the reception, we chose a new venue in town, The Playbarn. There are 2 function rooms to choose from and I chose the smaller room in the second floor. I like that they have an indoor playground and we get to have free 30 tickets of 1-hour pass to the playground. It was just perfect for our guests who brought their kids. Their foods were delicious too! My husband and I were satisfied with the food we chose for our guests.

When I was thinking of a theme for Fynn’s baptism, I wanted to go for the rustic teddy bear theme. We tried out Jocel’s Arts and Party Needs to style the venue. We wanted to be practical by not breaking our pockets with unnecessary cost just to impress people but at the same time, we still want to keep it tasteful & pretty. Jocel’s Party Needs was the answer to our needs. They delivered a beautiful styling that captured exactly what I wanted for the baptism. They were talented and innovative that they managed to create a pretty decorations without overpricing their clients.

By recommendation of my friend, we also got a great supplier for our cakes and cupcakes, Dolce Confections. It was such a breeze to do transactions with them. And their pastry creations were so lovely as well as yummy. They made a 3-tier blue cake with a cross on it and 3 playful teddy bears. For the cupcakes, they made a cute sleeping baby cupcakes. It was too adorable to eat, hehe.

My mom and niece helped out by making keychain giveaways for guests to remember Fynn’s special day. Of course, to preserve memories, we had the talented Argus Mente of Mezcla Studios take photos of the event.

But most importantly, it was a joyous occasion because Fynn is officially a Catholic, a part of the church of God. I pray my husband and I together with his godparents will guide him to be a good person with values and a deep love for the faith.

THINGS THAT INSPIRED ME THIS WEEK

This week was filled with wonderful blessings and deep realisations. This week, I was invited to attended a fun blogger event at Wihardja Furniture Showroom. I was happy I was able to bring along my hubby. We enjoyed a sumptuous Indonesian buffet and we get to shop around the showroom. We went home with several stuff for our place.

This week, I also featured expat Elena, a beautiful photographer who founded Pixelena Studio in my blog for the Expat Diaries. Read her story here. Check out her dreamy and whimsical photos.

Also, this week, I had my monthly get-together with fellow Filipina doctors working in the same company as me but different branches. It is such a great comfort to have support systems and friends if you are living and working abroad. It makes you feel that you have people to run to when the going gets tough, people with open ears to hear you complain, people who offer you encouraging advices and people who help you improve. I have several support systems of “gangs” in Singapore that gave me so much joy and comfort. Though we don’t often see each other but we always keep in touch.

Today is my bestfriend’s birthday. We have been since Grade 1 . We have experienced life’s up and down from medical school struggles, triumphs, heartaches & now having a happy family life and we are still best of friends. We often try to keep contact even how busy we are. I don’t know how we managed to be friends until now but one thing I know is that when my kids grow up, I will teach them the importance of having friends, in keeping friends and choosing the right friends.

Also today is All Saints’ Day. Back in the Philippines, it is a public holiday. We celebrate it by going to the cemetery and pay respect to our departed loved-ones in the Philippines It is also a holy day of obligation. I went to mass today and I was inspired by the homily of the priest. He said, we need saints in the 21th century. A saint who watch movies. A saint who surf the internet. A saint who drinks coke and eat hotdog. A saint who drinks beer with friends. A person who can still praise God during the modern times and not doesn’t often our God. How great is this calling. We don’t need to be uncool, boring or detached to be saints. We can still please God doing ordinary things just like St. Josemaria Escriva is preaching.
