IS IT A BOY OR GIRL BABY?

At around 18th-22nd  weeks of pregnancy, the baby’s gender can be revealed through ultrasound. Is it a boy or girl baby? I am currently in my 29th week of pregnancy now and my husband & I have already known our baby’s gender weeks before.

Working here in Singapore where there is a wonderful mix of races, I get to meet different races in my work. In my consultations, my protruding belly seem to be the first one greeting my patients before me. My patients would often acknowledge my gravid belly and ask the gender of my baby. I am amused that they would always have different basis of how they guessed the gender.

In the Philippines, some telltale signs that you are having a boy is when your nose gets a bit bigger and your neck & armpits get a bit darker. While having a girl would make you look extra pretty because of the estrogen coursing through your body. Hmmmm, it seems that my nose didn’t get bigger than its original size.

A Chinese  elderly lady told me that she think its a boy because  my belly is very round, a perfect circle. If is a girl, it would usually be pointing outward.

Another Malay elderly lady told me that she think its a boy. If a pregnant lady is having a boy, she tends to like to beautify herself  while those having girls gets lazy in fixing herself because her baby girl is taking away her beauty. Having boys also makes their mommy very energetic & hyper while those mommies having girls like to laze around & sleep. Also mommies of baby boys like sweet stuff while mommies of baby girls like sourish foods.

Today I met an Indian elderly lady who guessed again that I am having a boy because of the shape of my belly. My belly she said is going upward between my breasts while if it is  a girl, it normally goes sideward.

There is another theory that say that the sperm who makes boys moves quicker than those that makes girl. However those sperms that make boys die quicker than those that make girls. So with this theory, if you want a girl, you want to have intercourse two or three days before you ovulate. If you want to have a boy, then you should have sex closer to the time that you ovulate, or even during the time that you are ovulating. But again, this is just a theory that needs more research to truly influence your baby’s gender.

It is fun to hear all this old wives’ tale. Of course, I have studied in medical school how fertilization and conception occurs and a shape of pregnant woman’s belly has  no correlation on the baby’s gender. Hehe!

But whether it is a girl or a boy, what is really important that we will be having a healthy normal baby. It is enough blessing to be given a chance to be parents and be co-creators   of a miracle of life.

And yes, we are having a baby boy!
