5 THINGS YOU LEARN IN PART TIME JOBS

2: 35 PM, Starbucks in Tampines Mall

3 lady friends came to meet. N, a housewife with a daughter in college, K, a business entrepreneur with three grown up children and me, a full-time doctor with a 1-year-old son.

N asked me and K for an opinion if she would allow her daughter to get a part-time job. She was worried that it may disrupt her daughter from her studies. K readily said, “Why not?”. K had several experiences of part time jobs in singapore when she was younger. It was hard but she absolutely loved it. She emphasized to N that it will be a character-building experience for her daughter. She said she learned so much from her part time jobs. She is a very persuasive person so she went on and telling us of things that young people can learn from doing part time.

  1. ACCOUNTABILTY

Being on a job would require to be given a task that she needs to accomplish. She would be assigned to a specific task and she is responsible to see to it that it gets done. Maybe at home, if she doesn’t do her bed, N will do it for her. But at work, she would be held responsible if she doesn’t do her job well.

  1. FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

The best way for a young person to learn how to handle money is by making them work for their money. If they ask you for that expensive bag or a new gadget, let them look for part time jobs for students that would allow them to work hard for their whims. Guide them closely as they make financial decisions themselves and allow them to make their own budget. As they learn that they need to work a little harder for certain things, they would eventually make wiser money decisions later on.

  1. ADAPTABILITY

Being in part time jobs singapore, it will pull her from the comfort zone of her own clique. She will be forced to learn how to get along with other people and workmates that she wouldn’t often hang out in school. This is a good way for her test her people skills and learn to venture out of her normal crowd.

  1. BALANCE

If N’s daughter will get a job, it will require her to do a balancing act earlier in life. But the earlier the better. She would learn to balance her time for her school, work , friends and boyfriend. This would also require special guidance from N so that her time would be divided well in all aspects of her life.

Having a part time job would make her learn more about herself. She would realize what is her strenghth and weakness. She can also take a glimpse of her dream job working part time. It is a perfect opportunity for her see if she is really cut out in the certain types of jobs.

After that enlightening afternoon coffee chat with my two friends, N was convinced in allowing her daughter to take a part time job. I, too, was so convinced, I am planning on Naj to get a part time job when he gets louder. Hahaha!
