5 BENEFITS OF BABYWEARING

I am  such a fan of babywearing. Babywearing is the practice of wearing or carrying a baby in a sling or in another form of carrier. I can’t stop singing praises for this practice of attachment parenting. Let me tell you why…

1. IT INCREASES BOND WITH MOTHER AND BABY
The physical contact of mother with baby increases oxytocin, also known as the “bonding hormone”. This will lead more intimate bonding between mother and baby. Good news for dads is that they can also practice baby wearing and promote bonding with baby.

2. IT CAN ALLOW MOMMY TO BE HANDSFREE

I can do a lot when I babywear. I am handsfree! I can do my makeup, clean the room, blog or read book while drinking my morning drink. My husband and I can go for a dinner date because my baby is sleeping soundly in my carrier.

3. IT CAN INCREASE BREASTMILK PRODUCTION AND EASY TO BREASTFEED IN PUBLIC

Since baby wearing can stimulate the release of oxytocin, this bondng hormone  is responsible in increasing breastmilk production. So for low-supply mommies, this practice of baby wearing can help you. Plus using this type of carrier can make me breastfeed in public discreetly. I have done it numerous times without anyone noticing.

4. IT CAN HIDE MOMMY’S  POSTPARTUM TUMMY

All mommies know that it would take some time for a postpartum to return to its normal size (if it will ever). To avoid that awkward question by innocent inquisitive people, the “how far along are you?”, you get to showcase the product of the bulging belly while concealing the bulge.

5. IT GETS BABY TO SLEEP SOUNDLY

I notice when I put my baby in my carrier, in a few minutes, he is fast asleep. He hears my heart beat and it is his lullaby. The act of baby wearing simulates the time when baby was inside mommy’s womb — warm and safe.

There are still so many benefits of baby wearing.  These are based on Dr. William Sears, the founder of attachment parenting taken from Wikipedia.org.

The Benefits of Babywearing include:

  • In the wearing of newborns in particular, the mothers’ oxytocin levels are increased through the physical contact with the infant, leading to a more intimate maternal bond, easier breastfeeding and better care, thus lowering the incidence of postpartum depression and psychosomatic illness in the mother;[2] similarly, the father carrying the baby has benefits for the paternal bond.
  • Infants who are carried are generally calmer because all of their primal/survival need are met. The caregiver can be seen, heard, smelled, touched, tasted, provide feeding and the motion necessary for continuing neural development, gastrointestinal and respiratory health and to establish balance (inner ear development) and muscle tone is constant.[3]
  • Infants are more organized. Parental rhythms (walking, heartbeat, etc.) can have balancing and soothing effects on infants.
  • Infants are “humanized” earlier by developing socially. Babies are closer to people and can study facial expressions, learn languages faster and be familiar with body language.[4]
  • Independence is established earlier.[3]
  • Attachment between child and caregiver is more secure.[5]
  • Decreases risk of positional plagiocephaly (“flat head syndrome”) caused by extended time spent in a car seat and by sleeping on the back. Sleeping on the back is recommended to decrease the risk of SIDS. Cranial distortion resulting from non-vehicular time in car seats has shown to be more severe than in children who develop plagiocephaly from back-lying on a mattress.[6] Concern over plagiocephaly has also led the American Academy of Pediatrics to recommend that infants “should spend minimal time in car seats (when not a passenger in a vehicle) or other seating that maintains supine positioning.”[7] None of the babywearing positions require infants to lie supine while being carried. Infants can even be worn while they sleep, also decreasing sleeping time spent in a supine position.
