I just recently visited The Peranakan Singapore to try out their High Tea Set and their Durian 8-Course Feast. I couldn’t get enough of their savory and sweet dishes presented in such a beautiful and meticulous manner, I came back after a week with my hubby and blogger friends to try out their Tok Panjang Set.
The Peranakan Singapore is a restaurant at the heart of the bustling Orchard Road which offers you the authentic experience of dining Peranakan style. Peranakan refers to the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to Malaysia and Singapore. They are also referred to as Baba-Nyonya. Many were the elites of Singapore. Most have lived for generations along the straits of Malacca. They are known to be good cooks hence, the Peranakan cuisine came about.
Tok Panjang is a Baba Malay term that refers to a type of feast associated with weddings and special occasion. In Filipino culture, it can be likened to a “Fiesta“. So my friends, my hubby and I are in for a big feast. Tok is a Hokkien word that means “table” while Panjang is a Malay term which means “long”. The Tok Panjang has Eurasian, Malay and Chinese elements. This is often done to bring closeness among family members and is often done on weddings.
But no, we didn’t dine in a long table that night. We were seated in a big round table with a lazy susan on the middle of the table. We couldn’t help admire the decor of the restaurant which is purely Peranakan all throughout.
The Tok Panjang Feast started with soup either the Bak Wan Kepiting or Itik Tem. You can add sea cucumber or XO for an additional $20.
You have 2 choices of Tok Panjang Set: LKY for $90++ per set or WKW for $130 per set. One set is for 2 person sharing.
For the LKY set, it consists of :
Kueh Pai Tee
Prawn Ngoh Hiang
Ikan Goreng Sambal Tau Cheo
Ikan Goreng with Kichap Manis
Ayam Buah Keluak
Chef’s Dessert Platter
Coffee and Tea
For the WKW, in addition to above, you will also be having:
Sotong Masak Asam
Ayam Goreng Ketumbar
It was a feast for the senses shared with loved ones and close friends just like a typical Tok Panjang should be. We were honoured to have Chef Raymond Khoo join us during our enjoyable Peranakan feast.
The meal ended with a sweet note: Pandan Chiffon Cake with Gula Melaka Drizzle. It is has the right amount of sweetness with wonderful fluffiness to tease you palate.
The Peranakan Singapore does not only deliver you authentic Peranakan dishes, it gives you an experience of what Peranakan is truly about. You absorb the colorful culture, the intricacy of designs and the explosion of flavorful spices dancing in your mouth. It is definitely worth a visit.
To Chef Raymond Khoo, thank you for your hospitality and your infectious happy spirit. May you be showered with blessing and success in all your endeavours.
